Tompaulin are a small band with a Belle & Sebastian complex thrown upon them because of their dueting male/female vocals, and twee catchy tunes. This EP is an amazing effort. The first song "Slender" opens the floodgates on realism and grimness while remaining heartfelt and beautiful. The second song is a slice of life piece that recalls the Brit. tradition of bands like the Kinks, Pulp, and Blur but staying closer to the Smiths as well as B&S. The final song "My lIfe as a Carcrash" sounds amazingly like Spiritualized meets Radiohead, but with women along for the ride, which is a wonderful thing. This short EP leaves a particular appetite for more. Tompaulin are one of those bands you just have to try.
